theFoodette & Family: I'm Susan, welcome to my slice of the internet! I live in Austin, Texas where I was born and raised (a true Unicorn!). I'm a former Pre-K/Kindergarten teacher with a love of the outdoors and good food. I started my Stay At Home Mom journey in 2017 when my youngest was born with a severe heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. On my blog, you'll find some foodstuff, some parenting stuff, some teaching stuff, and a little bit of CHD awareness! You can also find me on Facebook and Instagram.

M&M Cookie Pie

I'm back! Anyone miss me? I wish I could say that I was away on some terrific adventure, or that I have been so inspired to create magical dishes that I have been too busy in the kitchen with a knife in one hand and a spatula in the other to blog anything.... but, no. I have been just busy with life-things. Adult things, really. Like going to work and being super busy every day, apartment hunting (which may be as much fun as bra shopping- ack), and thinking a lot about packing, cleaning, and making a giant Goodwill donation trip- but not actually doing any of it. Oh, I'm getting stressed just thinking about it. Cookie pie, anyone? Part of my birthday package from my mother last month included a large stack of mail and a container of M&M's shaped like the great state of Texas. Awesome. I wanted to make cookies, but I didn't want to make cookies. I didn't feel like I had the patience to ball up all the dough and then clean several cookie she...

Food Thoughts

Pretty sure I had food poisoning yesterday. :-( I am also fairly certain that it came from a brand-new container of Chobani yogurt (why!!!???) SO, yesterday I could eat nothing which really sucks because eating is my favoritist hobby! The no eating yesterday therefore left me feeling weak and energy-less today. Today while I was eating lunch with some of my team, one of the girls started describing how when she runs and works out she finds herself wanting to eat better and make healthier choices, but then when she's not running or working out regularly she craves junk food so much more. She asked me if I knew why. Of course I do! Endorphins! When you work out your body is releasing all those feel-good endorphins and it makes you want to fuel it with the premium grade stuff! Food is fuel for our bodies, perfect example: me feeling so weak and sluggish today! <- Cuz I didn't have any fuel in my tank! It works hand in hand. You eat bad, you have a bad workout or don'...

Dilly Beans- Guest Post

Today's Guest Post comes from Kenley Leigh at Green Door Hospitality ! Welcome! She's sharing her recipe for Dilly Beans- my dad canned a TON when I was growing up, but I've never done it myself. This recipe sounds uber-simple, gonna have to give it a go! Green Door Hospitality looks at the adventure that can be found within everyday entertaining. In an age where so much of human interaction is virtual, there is a simple beauty in seeing and relating with people in the “real world”. Kenley Leigh lives in the greater Austin area with her husband and their adorable new Scottish Terrier. Pantry Preserving: Dilly Beans Dilly Beans, otherwise known as 'Pickled Green Beans', is a great way to preserve those tasty fresh green beans that become abundant in our gardens and farmers markets. They are delicious on salads or as part of antipasto platters. My personal favorite though is serving them as a garnish with a Bloody Mary! This...
